Fredokiss Makes History: From Hip Hop Stages to Parliament

Malawi’s hip hop scene has always been vibrant, but today it marks a new chapter in the country’s political history. Penjani Kaluwa, famously known as Fredokiss, has been elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Soche-Zingwangwa constituency in Blantyre. With this victory, Fredokiss becomes the first-ever hip hop artist in Malawi to be voted into Parliament.

A Second Attempt, A Historic Win

This is not Fredokiss’s first time contesting. Back in the 2020 elections, he ran for the same seat but fell short. That loss, however, didn’t dim his political ambitions. Instead, it set the stage for a comeback that has now turned into a milestone for both music and politics in Malawi.

Representing UTM

Fredokiss contested under the banner of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), a party founded by the late Vice President Saulos Chilima. Today, the party is under the leadership of Dalitso Kabambe, who has taken over as president. Fredokiss’s victory not only strengthens UTM’s presence in Blantyre but also signals the growing trust in young and unconventional leaders.

The Hip Hop King Turned Politician

Known as the “Ghetto King Kong,” Fredokiss has always represented the voice of the youth and the marginalized. His music has carried messages of empowerment, unity, and resilience. Now, he takes that same energy from the stage to the floor of Parliament, promising to amplify the concerns of his people—especially the youth of Soche-Zingwangwa who have long looked up to him as a role model.

A Symbol of Youthful Leadership

Fredokiss’s election is more than just a political win—it’s a cultural shift. It proves that the boundaries between music, activism, and governance are blurring, and that young Malawians are ready to entrust leadership to those who truly represent their struggles and dreams.

As he transitions from the mic to the parliamentary chamber, Fredokiss carries the hopes of thousands who believe that leaders can rise from unexpected places—even from the stages of hip hop concerts.
